On the sixth of April 1320, Scotland re-affirms its independence by producing one of the most famous declarations of national independence - the Declaration of Arbroath. It was written in Latin and is believed to have been drafted by Bernard, abbot of Arbroath Abbey, who was the Chancellor of Scotland at the time.A stirring piece of writing, the document was sent to Pope John XXII and includes many well-known lines including the stirring: "It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
